Enroll in a Clinical Trial Today to Help Speed Research Toward a Cure for PD

Do you want to be a part of speeding better treatments and a cure for PD? There is a critical need for clinical trial participants — including people with Parkinson’s and healthy individuals. Read on to learn about two promising trials currently in need of volunteers.

Early findings suggest that levels of urate — a naturally occurring metabolite — in blood and spinal fluid might predict both the risk of PD and its worsening over time. Higher levels of urate may be related to a slower decline in PD. Michael Schwarzschild, MD, PhD, of Massachusetts General Hospital is conducting SURE-PD, a trial designed to find out if higher urate and slower PD decline just happen to occur together, or if urate causes PD to slow down. The trial makes use of inosine, a nutritional supplement that turns into urate in the body. People who take inosine should be able to elevate urate levels in their bodies. SURE-PD is looking at how safe inosine is in patients with early PD, if it causes side effects, and if it can raise urate levels in their blood and spinal fluid.

To participate in SURE-PD individuals must have at least two of the cardinal signs of PD (resting tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity), be age 30 or older at the time of PD diagnosis, have been diagnosed with PD within the past three years, and currently not be taking/needing any treatment for PD.

STEADY PD: Safety, Tolerability and Efficacy Study of Dynacirc CR® in Parkinson’s Disease

Dynacirc CR is the brand name of isradipine, a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of high blood pressure. Isradipine was shown to prevent the development of parkinsonism in animal models. However, it is not FDA-approved for the treatment of PD. STEADY-PD is designed to determine general safety, tolerability and to obtain pilot data on potentially effective doses of isradipine CR for slowing the progression of PD.

To participate in STEADY-PD individuals must have Parkinson’s disease diagnosed within the past three years, be 30 years of age or older at the time of diagnosis and currently not be taking/needing any treatment for PD (the use of Azilect, amantadine and anticholinergics are allowed).
